Individually each piece carries with it a creative idea or emotion that I will describe later in this statement. But more interesting is what is created when you look at all these images together. As a whole they carry an even greater idea and emotion which is how we as a society are becoming our own God by taking control of our own lives and environment, but together these images also express the feeling of disconnect and fear that comes along with this movement, as we have trouble believing in ourselves. Loop (Chicago,IL) is a sequenced of still photography tracing paths around political and historical sites within a city. Cites that may have had a profound influence on the urban development of the city. I liked this photo because it makes me feel calm and happy contemplating the control and peace of the mastered environment. So to me this piece represents a calming reflection on what we are capable of creating both architecturally and socially, represented through the buildings and the peaceful inhabitance. This piece contributes to the whole by showing our separation from nature as we create the world around ourselves and become our own reality and influence. This art was created with a camera which is neither an appropriate or inappropriate approach to this art piece. Monitor is a prisoner of war in a cell marking the passing of time with a baseball bounced against the wall. Monitor is a picture of a man who is alone, but at the same time is not as he is always being seen by someone, representing the feeling of isolation without ever actually being alone. This piece plays a part in the whole as a representative of a the breakdown of time as only a projection of our perspective, and our further separation form nature as we expand and become inundated in our own world creation. This piece was created by what looks to be a security camera frame and a clip from a war movie, which is appropriate as the camera and its operator are there to watch him yet he is alone. Voice: This is a British prison; it is created to be a metaphor for the difficulties in hearing when in a confinement state. It is very ominous and cold looking, expressing a loveless dead environment. In the whole of this collection this piece represents our distancing due to performance identities creating problems within our society. What technologies used to create this piece of art were a camera, which is the perfect medium to capture this image as a photograph is viewed by most to be a tool appropriate for documentation. Let’s Make Sure Everything is a Thing is a piece of interactive art that depicts little stars dumping into each other. You can change the types of interactions within this art piece by moving aspects of it around. This is a computer generated representation taking an artistic approach to data that might be collected from a science experiment. It brings to mind an idea of scientific progression and all the hopes we have for science to serve us as a new form of salvation. It plays the part of our new found faith and a major part of how our new society defines itself as their own Gods, by trying to understand everything. The technologies behind this creation is computer animation which is appropriate to the symbolism of this unbiased form of art as what is being presented comes from a more so than not unbiased source; a computer. Project/Capture is an ongoing series of interactive paintings by Los Angeles media artist Sonja Schenk. It deals with the disappearing realm of the private in modern life. The painting appears to be of a man, by the look of the cleft in his chin and the jaw line. And he appears to be a bit melancholy. To me this picture expresses the idea of introspection and doubt. This piece contributes to the whole by adding an aspect of uncertainly found through introspection. This piece was created through painting which is more than appropriate, as with this medium what is created is what is being perceived and not what is actually there. Dark Days, White Nights is taking you on a trip to 1960's Italy. It is about time passing and characters struggling with love, lust, modernism, and the city. It is a black and white photo of a woman standing it what appears to be a wide open area, with gusts of wind blowing by. The look on her face expresses a feeling of being lost and a sort of bewilderment. This facial expression when combined with the vast background creates a theme of being lost, and without direction. This piece contributes to the whole of the exhibition by expressing the control we have in our society but the lake of direction we have in where to go with it, as there is no one left but ourselves to go to for the answer. The technologies used in creating this piece of art were a camera which is neither a good or bad way to go about it. I think that this could have been expressed through many other media forms and still be as effective. This curration project has been a very fun project for me. And while the connections to our assigned readings may not be completely apparent at first I have seen a pretty clear connection between this project and the ideas of a databases, and narration as explained by Lev Manovich. This whole assignment is actually creating a miniature database out of a much larger database. A database as explained by Manovich is a collection of independent bits of information; text images ect. From this our assignment was then to create a narrative, a narrative being a compilation of cause and effect creating a trajectory of seeming unordered events thereby giving the overall theme of the curration. I have also been able to see very distinctly a correlation to what we have learned on performance identities. All of these pieces have been created in attempt to reach out; to express themselves; to be less alone, and through this they have performed a rendition of themselves as represented not only through their work but through the creation of their art work.
