Zach Blas is an artist and writer working at the intersections of networked media, queerness, and politics. His work includes video, sculpture, installation, and design, among other things. He is also a PhD Student in the Program in Literature at Duke University, and writes extensively on the question of art, activism, and sexuality. Zach and I discussed the question of a queer technology and just what queer theory might contribute to the fields of art and technology.

In works such as Untitled (white), Short considers the concepts of authorship and reproduction. He begins by photocopying a blank piece of colored construction paper onto a blank piece of standard copy paper—a method that results in seemingly random black-and-white patterns printed on the copy paper. He then copies that copy, repeating the process multiple times and continuing the random patterning process. Once the artist selects a final permutation, the abstract image is then photographed, formatted as a slide, and projected onto a primed canvas. In the final stage, Short painstakingly recreates this image, taking care to remain true to the particular patterns and shapes generated by the machine. In Short’s process, the painter and the photocopier undergo a role reversal: the copier creates the abstraction and the painter reproduces the copy. By removing the emotive quality of the artist and leaving the authorship to a machine, Short reinvents traditional painterly practice.
Fellow art blog Art Fag City is ringing in their 5 year anniversary with a project called The Sound of Art and they are seeking submissions. For The Sound of Art, they are asking for "documentation of the sounds heard in galleries, museums, and project spaces in New York over the past five years in the form of a DJ battle record, CD, and MP3 recording." These recordings will be pressed into a record mastered by Matt “Madly” Azzarto at Think Tank Studio with cover art designed Phillip Neimeyer. A public program and a launch party at Santos Party House are also in the works. Details and info here.
Rhizome-commissioned artist Tristan Perich celebrates the release of his 1-Bit Symphony on Cantaloupe tonight at Roulette with a special concert at 7pm. Daniel Wohl's "Glitch," Shawn Greenlee, Michael Gordon's "XY" and Steven Reich's "Violin Phase" are also scheduled. A "circuit album," 1-Bit Symphony performs a composition in five movements which have all been programmed onto a single microchip. Perich talks about the process in the clip above, and provides a sample of the work. I-Bit Symphony is an continuation of Perich's interest in 1-bit electronics, realized in previous projects such as in 1-Bit Video (2006-Ongoing) and his other circuit album 1-Bit Music (2004-2005).

Rhizome seeks an Editorial Fellow from September through January 2010. The Fellow will support the editorial department at Rhizome through research, writing and administration. This position is a unique opportunity for a person with a strong dedication to the field of contemporary art and technology to further their engagement and hone their professional skills.
The Editorial Fellow must be based in New York and must be able to commit to 16 hours of work per week, for 6 months, beginning in Fall 2010. This position is unpaid, but academic credit may be arranged. The Editorial Fellow will coordinate and assist in production of Rhizome's blog and weekly newsletter Rhizome News. Fellow will support daily publishing and maintenance of the blog, as well as researching and writing editorial essays, reviews and opinion pieces.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a high level of familiarity with contemporary art and particularly new media and its history. Education or advanced experience beyond the undergraduate level is preferred. The candidate must have very strong writing, editing, and analytical skills, and very high internet literacy. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software is also required and basic Photoshop skills are preferred.

In half-light and fractured, staggering visuals, a young woman enters into a suburban house at night. As the door closes behind her, both the physical space and the surface of the projection begin to splinter, collapse and rupture. Spaces enclose and enfold, the female subject multiples and shatters across the screen, and the film itself screeches and tears as the sprockets and optical soundtrack violently invade the fictional world. Any semblance of a cinematic narrative is overwhelmed and assaulted, leaving it scattered in a thousand shards amid an entirely unique cinematic language. This is Peter Tscherkassky's Outer Space.
