a mythical journey to the underworld ...
Let ME Go is inspired by the Sumerian myth of Inanna’s descent to the underworld to visit her sister Ereshkigal. Only fragments of this story survive, inscribed on clay tablets in cuneiform. Inanna must pass through seven gates and at each relinquish a symbol of her power and status in order to enter the underworld - from which no mortal can return.
"let ME go" is a sensual interactive journey and a concurrent online installation, created by Antonella Diana and Helen Varley Jamieson. Audiences in the physical space interact with visitors to the online installation, combining dualities such as the physical and the virtual/spritiual, the visceral and the technological, the heavens and the underworld. Antonella Diana is visual art, scenographer and a founding member of Teatret OM. Helen Varley Jamieson is a theatre practitioner and digital artist who creates cyberformance - live performance on the internet.
Inspired by the ancient Sumerian text The Descent Of Inanna To the Underworld, Let ME Go is an ongoing collaboration between Antonella Diana and Helen Varley Jamieson that allows for the presentation of work in different media and different environments. Through this collaboration, we aim to not only extend ourselves personally and artistically but also to build tangible connections between different sections of the world, geographically and culturally.
The work takes the form of a multimedia installation with live performance elements. The path of the mythological journey provides a structure for the different media through which the ideas are elaborated and transformed.
Initiated by Antonella Diana in October 2003, the project has manifested as an installation (2006), a performance installation in Ringkobing, Denmark (June 2009) and the physical and virtual installation "Let ME Go" which was presented online and in public libraries in Denmark during October 2009.
