The Landscapes is part of Margot Herster’s major creative work titled The Guantánamo Project. The Guantanamo Project is a large body of work, developed over the past five years, which focuses on the complex relationships between detainees at Guantanamo Bay, their attorneys, the international press, and the news-reading public. In it's entirety, the multi-media work includes over 2000 photographs, videos, texts, and audio documents collected by Herster and sourced from attorneys representing suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay. This intimate work tells the tale of detainees with family woes, anxiety over missing loved ones, and longing for familiar landscapes. Ultimately, The Landscapes highlights the power of photography to build trust and facilitate relationships in circumstances of anxiety and isolation.
