Born in Paris (France) in 1969, artist Reynald Drouhin lives and works in Paris. He studied plastic arts at the Fine Arts School of Paris (DNSAP, 1998), obtained the Hypermedia Multimedia Mastère (ENSBA, 1998), and a Master at the University of Paris 1 (1994).

The artist is currently teaching at the Fine Art School of Rennes and has been a member of the group since 1996.

The Monochromes paintings have been a keystone in the Art history. They were first introduced as a critical caricature, on a humoristic tone, but they soon became a way to state strong views and conceptual intentions. The Monochromes stand at the intersections between pure perception and abstract concepts. By painting monochromes, artists have tried to approach infinity through emptiness. One can ask if not showing any image equals to void… But isn’t the only real void monochrome the bare canvas waiting for a concept, for a creator?

What are the links between “Monochrome“ and the digital trio “computer/data processing/internet”? Are they compatible? At first, there seems to be an immense gap between them: one seems very simple, the other too technological.

We all experience the fact that a computer is a machine that crashes, bugs and produces errors. It often ends up as a blue screen. Sometimes the screen shows a number referring to the error, most of the time it remains completely blank. In a certain way, the blue screen of the computer, with its emanating light, is as ideal as a monochrome painting. Even turned off, deprived from any signal, the computer screen stares at us with all its blackness.
And on the internet, the monochrome is most coherent: this media and this genre both deal with the same immateriality, the same unseen, the same virtuality.
Take for instance the colour background of an Html page, as revealed in one of the first internet work: “Unendlich, fast...” by artist Holger Friese in 1995: a perfect, smooth, impalpable, flat blue coloured page.

Yves Klein's main preoccupation was the idea of the immateriality in art. Working with the Klein blue was a way to question the meaning of art as a whole and to apply a philosophy to the Monochrome.
What is more immaterial than computer data? Didn't we speak about virtual reality for long enough?
The internet has the capacity to challenge and redefine the notion in a very creative way, still keeping the claim to strong concept and identity. The monochrome has now to integrate new components: time, space and geographical location, generation, sharing, participative construction, and randomness, to list only a few.
The network will bring a new life to the Monochrome. A virtual one. What is yours going to look like?


IP Monochrome

IP Monochrome is an interactive piece in which monochrome is seen as
a collective and autonomous piece.

When one connects to Reynald Drouhin's web site, a monochrome is
generated, using its IP address. Initially coded in numbers, the IP
is transformed in RGB (red-green-blue) values. These values are
themselves converted in hexadecimals codes, thus giving a unique
individual reference colour to the user. The monochrome is generated
immediately on the web site and without visible steps.

Without asking, Reynald Drouhin transforms the user in a creator, in
the author of an unknown monochrome, since no one can anticipate the
colour that will come out.

Depending on the country, the tonality of the monochrome can have
similarities, but millions of possibilities exist.

The active memory, which comes out of these connections, is
participative and evolving.

Clicking on one's own monochrome takes you to a griddles mosaic made =

of multicolour squares. It is a monochrome alignment collection of
the previous connection and your own.
On the top left corner of your screen, a small sized image your
monochrome appears and gives you an access of your monochrome in the
context of the network.
These colours are fragments representation of all the people who
connected before you.

The true digital catalogue of your passing and your own identity on
the internet.

An "Other" monochrome

Just like any particles in the ever-growing, immeasurable network,
you are identified but not recognized. You belong without
controlling. Your colour can be desired or not, you can like it or
not, it is yours but you do not possess it. It is enforced on you.

Exhibition Sans Titre (Untitled) From April 20th to May 20th 2006, Fine Art school's Gallery, Lorient.

A multimedia and Net artist, Reynald Drouhin immerses himself in the network, appropriates materials and information available on the Web, twists softwares, experiments with errors and bugs, manipulates images and sounds found in the deepest realms of the net.

Using images accumulation processes, therefore revealing a profusion of random and fragmentary representations, these devices question the nature and use of digital images.

For this exhibition, Reynald Drouhin created five new works using digital art, sculpture, video, and photography
