UCLA Department of Design Media Arts Presents Fall MFA Show Sneak Peek

New works spanning disciplines of art, design, science and technology from UCLA's innovative MFA
students to be show from 18 to 25 October in the New Wight Gallery at UCLA

Los Angeles, October 1, 2012—UCLA's Department of Design Media Arts is pleased to announce the fall show from it's 2013 MFA class. The artists—Hui Fong Wah (Phoebe), Gottfried Haider, Nicholas Hanna, Kian Peng (Bin) Ong, Chris Reilly, Dennis Rosenfeld, and Richard Wheeler—will show a selection of new works developed over the past year and throughout a summer which took members of the group around the world to exhibit, create, learn and explore. The 2013 MFA class has previously shown strong works exploring current issues in installation art, site specific sound, optical science and phenomena, and surveillance, themes which continue to drive the work in development for this exhibition.

The exhibition opening will be held 18 October from 5:00pm, also in the New Wight Gallery. Exhibition hours are from 10:00am to 5:00pm from 19 to 25 October.
More information about the individual artists, including links to their personal websites, can be found through their profiles on the Design Media Arts homepage:

Chicago artist Chris Reilly brings the heat with a collection of projects based on political histories of control, information and death.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a full-sized, fully operational recreation of a guillotine, implemented with allegiance to contemporary ideals of eco-friendly sustainability. A windmill mounted out of the gallery window provides power to ratchet the guillotine blade into place, and release it automatically.

To compliment this artifact of equal-rights execution, Reilly has included an automatic “text-redacter,” which scans, censors and shreds documents in real time. Also featured in the show is a video piece interpreting the State of the Union address as an abstracted video and light event, and several smaller pieces that focus on Reilly’s interest in paradoxical politics and guilt.

Help Support the Don't Sue Chris Reilly Campaign!

Dear Friend,

My name is Clark Farnsworth. I am the director of a grassroots campaign
called the Don't Sue Chris Reilly Campaign. The campaign is aimed primarily at
protecting prominent Chicago artist Chris Reilly against litigation
relating to his artistic practice of using appropriated images. The campaign is also aimed at creating a dialogue around the issues raised by Chris Reilly's artwork and the Don't Sue Chris Reilly Campaign, including (but not limited to) intellectual property laws/rights, freedom of expression, and participation in internet/network culture.

Chris Reilly and the Don't Sue Chris Reilly Campaign would appreciate your participation in this dialogue. Please post any thoughts/opinions/etc. and Chris Reilly or a member of our Campaign Team will be happy to engage you. In addition to the forum here, there is a forum for just such a discussion on the Don't Sue Chris Reilly Campaign Website.
