& (Barbora Trnková and Tomáš Javůrek): HEMILOADER

Dates:
Tue Aug 25, 2015 19:00 - Sun Sep 27, 2015

Location:
Olomouc, Czech Republic

Barbora Trnková and Tomáš Javůrek, internet artists from Brno, are to be the latest residents of Olomouc exhibition space Vitrína Deniska. Their joint exhibition HEMILOADER is based on their long term consideration of preloder phenomenon in the context of art.

‘For us, Preloader does not stand for awaiting something which is about to happen. It does not stand for visualization of a more important process whose results we are waiting for. Preloader is a result itself. It is hope, it is assurance. Calming, just like mother’s caress. Preloader is rotation in the (at least) opposite direction. Multiplying becomes dividing but the value is not reduced.’
Hemiloader half opens the semi-permeable half space, everything takes place in half time of half meanings. It is not clear that something is happening, as nothing might be happening as well.

After the opening, presentation of the artists’ work will be held in the premises of W7 (Wurmova 7) in Olomouc.

Lorna Mills: GIF Saver

Dates:
Mon Dec 01, 2014 00:00 - Sat Jan 31, 2015

curated by: Mary Meixner
starting December 1 2014

Lorna Mills is Canadian digital artist publicly exhibiting her work in solo and group shows all over the world since the early 1990s. In addition to her own work, she has recently curated several animated GIF screenings including “Clusterfuck Zoo” at Transfer Gallery in Brooklyn & Hallwalls in Buffalo as well as an animated GIF Collection for “David Bowie is” at the Art gallery of Ontario. She is currently curating a remake of John Berger’s 1972 documentary series “Ways of Seeing”, retitled “Ways of Something” consisting of one minute slices by 113 artists.

Lorna Mills is most famous for her photo-based GIF work and its installations in physical space. Her GIFs often revolves around the themes of sexuality and violence yet reveal something uncanny and absurd whilst amazingly pure and aesthetically perfectly balanced. To quote her in one of her interviews, “It may be deceptive at first, but I am ravingly formal and very precise with all my compositions.”

The contradictory touch of the skin, very dense and in its innocence full of violence and repressed sexuality, has became a theme for our curatorial selection of several already existent GIF animations as screen saver. Ever repeating and never fulfilled, the physical actions in GIF Saver are supersede as quickly as your attention.

Shitstorm on Newborn, online performance by Fach & Asendorf

Dates:
Fri Dec 06, 2013 00:00 - Sat Dec 07, 2013

PAF - Festival of Film Animation (www.pifpaf.cz) has this year became a partner with German internet gallery Fach & Asendorf (http://fa-g.org/), that will also participate on the festival programme. Famous German digital artists will perform, exclusively for PAF, original and rather provocative piece on Facebook:

Shitstorm on Newborn
Online Performance, 2013
Ole Fach & Kim Asendorf

Everybody enjoys the pleasure of newborn pictures on Facebook, we love to add cute comments and even love to share the babies of our friends. Newborns are the holy grail of privacy posting. Why is the photo of a newborn so untouchable? Is it the innocence?
Konrad Lorenz proposed the concept of baby schema, a set of facial and body features, that make a creature appear "cute" and activate in others the motivation to care for it.
Maybe a Newborn reminds people of their own birth or they just wish to have a baby too. There is a secret and indescribable feeling that keeps you calm and you feel a little bit dazed when you see them, they are like a brightening drug. In the offline world newborns live in a very lovingly and guarded comfort zone, where everybody wants there best and everybody cares. But online there is another world, if you put your newborn on the Internet nobody can protect them.
We will show a newborn's life on the Internet, in an one hour live performance on Facebook. We will engage Facebook users to insult Babies and muck around with other users. Our desktops will be live streamed into the PAF exhibition in Olomouc.

ERNEST EDMONDS AS „CULT“ ON FESTIVAL OF FILM ANIMATION

Dates:
Thu Dec 05, 2013 00:00 - Sun Dec 08, 2013

Location:
Olomouc, Czech Republic

Ernest Edmonds, great pioneer of computer animation, has been chosen as main festival guest at Czech Festival of film animation and contemporary art. The festival is PAF – Festival of Film Animation, held for the twelfth year already in Olomouc, Czech Republic. The dealing with conception of animation is rather unique in this festival – they concentrate on the phenomena of animation in context of cinematography, media studies and visual arts.
Here are the terms that rank among the key words and the leading topics:
animation, archiving, audiovisual art, database, design, digital culture, experimental film, intermediality, cinematography, presentation, motion picture, remediation, video art.

PAF is put together by a professional team and every year students of film, theatre and media studies, who have the opportunity to enforce their own curatorial programmes, are challenged to cooperate. The uniquely European atmosphere of the festival is supported by the academic background. The festival has its own editorial series and a database of films and videos supported by the production.

After dealing heavily with internet art last year, this year PAF concentrates on inner “Kinetics of Image”, its decomposition into individual fragments of its “dilapidation” or the gradual “dissolving” during the dynamic processes of projection and animation (yes, it of course means also loads of glitch art). No wonder they chooses Ernest Edmonds as their main festival guest.

This year we have invited the British pioneer of computer-based animation, Ernest Edmonds, who has studied mathematics and philosophy and works as a professor at many academic institutions. Since the end of the 1960s Ernest Edmonds has dealt with computer-based animated images. Besides of his authorial production, Edmonds will also speak about his own scientific research,
say the festival representatives.

The special category of PAF Cult is always represented by a personality who literally touches animation, cinematography and visual arts, who gives at the festival a masterclass, in which he or she introduces their work or theoretical postulates.

In past, the honorary position of PAF Cult was occupied inter alia eg. by legendary Czech director of animated films Břetislav Pojar (2003), Austrian experimental filmmaker Peter Kubelka (2008), Croatian guru of experimental cinema Ivan Ladislav Galeta (2009), rotoshop creator Bob Sabiston (2011), director and VJ Peter Greenaway (2010) or Dutch internet artist Constant Dullaart (2012).
