Drone's Eye View: A Look at How Artists are Revealing the Killing Fields

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone, has become one of the most potent weapons of contemporary warfare. Remotely controlled by operators thousands of miles away from the theatre of war, drones carry out aerial attacks which leave hundreds of people dead. The increasing amount of ‘collateral damage’ from US drone strikes on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, recently lead prominent politician, Imran Khan, to lead a high-profile protest against their use.

Artists have been actively documenting the impact of the use of drones in warfare for some years now.  Trevor Paglen’s Drone Vision, recently on show at Lighthouse in Brighton, provides us with a chilling “drones-eye-view” of a landscape, enabling us to see what drone-operators see.

Five Thousand Feet is the Best by Omer Fast

The utterly compelling and disturbing film installation, Five Thousand Feet is the Best by Israeli artist Omer Fast, tells the story of a former Predator drone operator, recalling his experience of using drones to fire at civilians and militia in Afghanistan and Pakistan. At one stage of the film, he describes the use of what marines refer to as “the light of god”, the laser targeting marker, which is used to direct hellfire missiles to their intended target.

“We call it in, and we’re given all the clearances that are necessary, all the approvals and everything else, and then we do something called the Light of God – the Marines like to call it the Light of God. It’s a laser targeting marker. We just send out a beam of laser and when the troops put on their night vision goggles they’ll just see this light that looks like it’s coming from heaven. Right on the spot, coming out of nowhere, from the sky. It’s quite beautiful.” (quoted from Five Thousand Feet is the Best).

A collaboration between Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
and Tate Modern

user_mode is an international, multidisciplinary symposium looking at
interactive art and design practices. It will examine one of the key
concerns for many creative practitioners - engaging the emotions of the

Artists, designers and critics frequently refer to "emotional engagement".
What is meant by this? Is it immersion, rapture, agency, reflection? This
question is crucial to interactive art and design practice where the user's
response is sensitive to context and can not only influence the form and
content of the work but also, in some cases, the future direction of
technological development. user_mode will aim to locate techniques,
instruments, contexts and terms to provide clearer insight into this theme.

user_mode will provide an opportunity to hear from internationally renowned
artists, designers and theorists as well as emerging practitioners. It is
intended that concerts, performances and drop-in studios featuring artists,
designers, architects, researchers and technicians informally presenting
works in progress will complement presentations and panel discussions.

Key contributors will include: Sara Diamond (Director, Media and Visual
Arts Banff, Canada), Stuart Jones (composer/performer/interactive sound
artist based in the UK), Lev Manovich (New Media theorist), David Ross
(Director of the Beacon project New York, and formerly Director of San
Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art) and
Tobi Schneidler (Architect, Interactive Institute, Stockholm)

How do you engage and sustain the interest of the user/visitor/player in an
interactive experience whether it be reflexive architecture, interactive
film, art installation, responsive environment, computer games,
performance, product, communication or experience design?

Questions for discussion may include: does interactivity promise a more
profound experience than more traditional responses to art and design? What
does it add? How is it measured? Does interactive work offer more than
conventional cinema, theatre, painting or architecture in emotional terms?
Is there more sense of participation?

user_mode will seek to identify models of emotional engagement, aiming to
question, extend and rework the most topical of the categories outlined below:

- Emotion as content or theme of the work
- Emotion as agency and control
- Emotion as subjective experience
- Emotion as a cognitive and physical process
- Emotion as an element of discovery learning in interactive exhibitions
- Emotion and navigation in architecture
- Emotion and narrative in film
- Emotion and gaming
- Emotion in sound composition and audio environments

We are now calling for papers from artists, designers, theorists,
technologists, scientists, architects, musicians, philosophers and others
interested in this field.

The call for papers is aimed at all disciplines that can contribute to this
discussion. Fresh perspectives will be sought by bringing together
different disciplines to share their views.

You are invited to submit a short proposal for a 30-minute
visual/audio/verbal presentation in the conference or a performance or a
studio demonstration. Your proposal should include the following information:

1. Name
2. Location
3. Contact Details
4. URL (if applicable)
5. 250 word proposal
6. Type of proposal (is it a paper, a studio demonstration or performance?)
7. 200 word biography

Proposals must be sent via email. Please include: "user_mode proposal" in
the subject line. The following formats will be accepted:

Europe's borders are increasingly frontlines of political and social
dissent. Asylum-seeking and political migration are some of the most
significant issues of our time. This discussion will explore the
contentious role of borders in Europe and beyond, and the way artists are
contesting these geographical and cultural perimeters.

Artist, Heath Bunting talks about his project, borderXings Guide, which
consists of 'walks' that traverse national boundaries without interruption
from customs, immigration, or border police. The project is currently on
display on Tate's website <http://www.tate.org.uk/netart/>

German critic and activist, Florian Schneider will discuss the disruption
of European borders through civil disobedience campaigns such as Cross the
Border and No One is Illegal.
Writer and critic Armin Medosch will chair the discussion.

for those who we haven't been updating regularly, we are at the makrolab
research station in scotland. makrolab is a temporary sustainable research
base, with living space for 4 - 6 people.

after a short fine spell, we are now back to usual weather patterns for the
area with driving rain and howling wind ;-)

progress has been steady though, with makrolab crew numbers peaking a 9
yesterday, with: Marko Peljhan (project founder, .si), Tim Knowles (artist,
uk), Stephen Kovats (artist, writer, architect, .ca), Helen Evans (artist
based, .fr), Adam Hyde (r a d i o q u a l i a, .nz), me, Ewen Chardronett
(writer, researcher, scientist, .fr), with guests visits from Nina Czegledy
(curator, .hu/.ca) and Helena Johard (scientist and artist, .se).

many projects in progress.

the inclement weather yesterday allowed us to take some time to hold a
discussion meeting in the 'makrolab lounge', for a series of informal
'lectures' about our respective projects. stephen kovats and nina czegledy
outlined the concept of the aurora universalis project
<http://makrolab.ljudmila.org/research/aurora/rsrchaurora.html>, and talked
about how the geographical specificity of aurora phenomena could be
countered by the use of mobile telecommunications. a lively discussion
ensued about ionospheric activity in general, with the obligatory
discursive digressions into tesla's experiments and the shadowy HARPP
research been carried out in alaska.

ewen chardronnet gave a thorough introduction to the i-weather project
<http://www.i-weather.org>, outlining the background of his research
consortium, and the reasoning behind the desire to construct artficial
weather phenomena, optimised for human habitats which are isolated from
normal seasonal changes. a debate about melatonin ensued - does sunlight
stimulate or retard melatonin production? if it is the former, why is
melatonin taken as an anti-depressant? comments/suggestions welcome.

helen evans talked about her own interests in weather, which started during
her experiments with the ARTIFI-CIEL installation
<http://hehe.org.free.fr/artificiel/index.html> and the online
weatherproject.org <http://www.weatherproject.org/>. her interest is
cross-referencing data about physical weather activity, with man-made
phenomena such as air pollution. the resulting new weather phenomena could
be charted in forecasts, and visualised online or on-air ....

later on we staged the premiere of makro_kino or makro_cine - the
makrolab's first cinema screening. the film screened was 'no man's land'
the film which won the academy award for 'best foreign film' at the 2002
oscars. horrific syncing problems between the audio and video made the
blackly comedic and disturbingly bleak experience even more surreal.

the 'evening' ended with a brief but lively chat with jonathan berry a
researcher at the (U.S.) National Science Foundation's Amundsen-Scott
research station in antartica. this chat was a part of a seies of iVisit
discussion sessions, organised by stephen kovats as part of the aurora
universalis project. an inernal hull breach within the makrolab made
already chilly conditions slightly more icy, so we were forced to cut the
chat short at a little past 0400. however we still managed to confirm some
of ewen's earlier assertions about the human body's natural 25 hour
cicadian rhythm, as well as seeing some of berry's extraordinary aurora
photographs, posted on the CNN space site:

back down to earth at base_camp, we have new photographs online of the
industrious activities of 18 july (that rare sunny day). specifically we
have image modules documenting the construction of makrolab FM - the
makrolab's temporary radio station (which has now been donated to helen for
her ongoing experiments); and tim knowles' insect compound.

Two new net art projects by Heath Bunting and Susan Collins have just launched on Tate's website: .

* Heath's project, 'BorderXings Guide' , primarily consists of documentation of walks that traverse national boundaries, without interruption from customs, immigration, or border police. The work comments on the way in which movement between borders is restricted by governments and associated bureaucracies.
The website is not available to everyone who has an internet connection. People wishing to view the website must physically travel to one of the listed designated locations, or apply to become an authorised client themselves. The project intends a reversal of the way that borders restrict movement and challenge the supposed liberties that accompany the concept of the Internet as a borderless space.

* Susan Collin's work, 'Tate in Space' tracks the developments of Tate's new museum in orbit, documenting the architectural processes involved in the construction of the museum, and the launch of the Tate Satellite. The site explores ways in which Tate in Space will extend visitor experience and engage new audiences. Tate in Space will act as an arena for debate and reflection on the nature of art in space, raising questions about cultural and institutional ambition and the very human desires to observe and communicate.

Tate online presents latest netart
Tate Online together with BT

Following the success of its netart commissions in 2000, Tate will launch new works by artists Heath Bunting and Susan Collins on 1 July. Tate&#8217;s website, www.tate.org.uk, now registers over 1.5 million unique users a year. As well as providing information on the four Tate galleries and the Tate Collection, Tate Online, sponsored by BT, continues to develop a distinct and identifiable programme, including exhibitions of work created specifically for this medium.

Heath Bunting will develop a new work in a series that is currently underway at www.irational.org/borderXing/. In this series, he carries out border crossings in Europe, locating specific national boundaries and undertaking walks that traverse them without interruption from customs, immigration, or border police. The walks are documented with notes and photographs. Bunting&#8217;s walks recall the work of Hamish Fulton and Richard Long and can be seen as contributing to the tradition in conceptual art that takes as its subject themes of landscape and space. Crucially though, these walks question political, economical and juridical aspect of travel. The work will continue to develop throughout the year.

Susan Collins has initiated a development programme for a Tate in Space. At this stage of the programme, the Tate in Space website is the key route through which members of the public can follow developments, witness the architectural process, and follow the notional Tate Satellite orbiting earth every 92.56 minutes. The site explores ways in which a Tate in Space might extend visitor experience and engage new audiences. Tate in Space online will act as an arena for debate and reflection on the nature of art in space, raising questions about cultural and institutional ambition and the very human desires to observe and communicate.

Alongside these new works Tate has commissioned supporting texts. Florian Schneider will discuss the work of Heath Bunting and Paul Bonaventura will examine Susan Collins&#8217;s project. Josie Berry will provide a contextual overview for the works. These texts will be available on the Tate site on 1 July 2002.

As a twenty-first century network, the Tate galleries and Tate Online engage with the art of the past but also intervene in the debates and practices of the present, through Tate&#8217;s collection and displays, the public events programmes and the exhibitions and commissions. The website, powered by BT Openworld, has grown to be among the most successful museum sites in the world, with visitors from more than 140 countries in 2001. Since BT and BT Openworld became Tate Online&#8217;s partners, visitor figures have almost doubled, with May 2002 registering 197,00 unique visitors, the highest figure to date.
