d.r.e.a.m. {Ben Valentine}
Ben Valentine is an independent writer and curator studying how technology, media, and politics intersect around the world. Some recent articles include: “Cyberfeminists Go Deep on Big Data, Privacy, and Surveillance” (Hyperallergic, 2015), “Networked Culture and Surveillance” (Medium, 2013), and “The Pirate Party’s ‘Poetician’ Plans to Make Iceland a Data Haven” ( Motherboard, 2014). Valentine’s recent research and travel informs his conception of the “neoliberal gaze,” which he describes as: “a transnational means of looking that is invasive, self-serving, reductive, and restructures that which it scours to be more in line with the looker’s own image.”

Join us for a conversation preceded by a short talk.

d.r.e.a.m. {Data Rules Everything Around Me}
Privacy has been pronounced dead; allegedly “free” services cost us troves of personal data; our governments know more about us than we do ourselves. No one actually “Agrees” to these “Conditions”, yet short of abandoning all modern conveniences, resistance seems futile. But fear not! There are loads of projects and people working on ways to take back our digital agency. Data Rules Everything Around Me (d.r.e.a.m.) is a roughly-monthly series devoted to openly discussing these topics. Featured writers, artists, developers and other cultural producers are invited to share their research and perspectives on the data that fuels the systems that run our world.

d.r.e.a.m is developed + moderated by Nick Briz && Jon Satrom in Chicago, IL.

GLI.TC/H 20111 [Chicago]

Thu Nov 03, 2011 19:00 - Mon Nov 07, 2011

Chicago, Illinois
United States of America

Now in its second year, GLI.TC/H gathers a variety of participants + works + ideas from within glitch/dirty/experimental-new-media art communities into a multi-day & multi-format happening consisting of video screenings, real-time performances, workshops, lectures, panels, a gallery exhibition and on-going online components.
Thinkers and artists; Makers and breakers converge to celebrate technological catastrophe. A glitch is a moment known to everyone but enjoyed by few. GLI.TC/H brings together those inspired/curious/provoked by glitches and provides a platform to break things, share thoughts, and develop ideas.
GLI.TC/H will include works from over 100 participants from more than a dozen countries and will be taking place in virtual-space at and in real-space from Nov 3 - 6 in Chicago, US; Nov 11 - 13 in Amsterdam, NL; Nov 19 in Birmingham, UK.
Recent writings, works, and experiments in glitch art exemplify the potential of new-media-art to expose critical links within our (increasingly mediated) digital-culture. Last year’s conference brought a diverse and geographically scattered community together to discuss and share their works and ideas in real-time and real-space. The conversations had and connections made at GLI.TC/H 2010 have continued to develop virtually over the past year. GLI.TC/H 20111 will collate and celebrate these glitchy developments in an unstoppable multi-city event fueled by these chaotic communities and vibrant participants old and new.
GLI.TC/H 20111 has been made possible by 146 online Kickstarter backers.
